alliance

Home / glossary / alliance

In the world of orchids, the term ‘alliance’ is like a family group for closely related orchid types. Imagine it as an extended family in the plant world.

Just as you might have cousins, aunts, and uncles who share some physical traits with you, orchids in an alliance share certain characteristics and can often interbreed with each other. They’re not exactly the same, but they’re closely related enough that scientists and orchid enthusiasts group them together.

For example, the Cattleya Alliance includes orchids that look similar to or are closely related to the classic corsage orchid (Cattleya). This group includes not just Cattleya orchids, but also related genera like Laelia, Brassavola, and others. They all share some common features in their flowers and growth habits.

The alliance concept is useful because:

  1. It helps growers understand which orchids might have similar care needs.
  2. It gives breeders an idea of which orchids can be crossbred to create new hybrids.
  3. It helps scientists study the relationships between different orchid types.

Think of it as a way of saying, ‘These orchids are all part of the same extended family, even if they’re not identical siblings.
