intergeneric

Home / glossary / intergeneric

In orchid breeding, “intergeneric” refers to a hybrid that is created by crossing orchids from two or more different genera (natural groupings of related species). For example, when an orchid from one genus (like Vanda) is crossed with an orchid from a completely different genus (like Arachnis), the resulting hybrid is called an intergeneric hybrid. This is different from regular hybridization within the same genus, and represents a more complex form of orchid breeding that can create unique combinations of characteristics from distinctly different orchid groups.
